July 28, 2007- Clemente rivals Monarchs and Iron Horse have struck a deal to trade three big-name players. The Horse will send Walter Johnson and Ozzie Smith to the Monarchs in exchange for Alex Rodriguez and unit considerations. The two teams had been in negotiations during the off-season, with the Horse attempting to acquire Rodriguez. Those talks broke down, and the teams ended up trading reliever Ron Reed and starter Teddy Higuera, and swapped draft picks. All the while Iron Horse owner Dru Himes has made it known that he still wanted to acquire A-Rod. Once Himes decided to make Walter Johnson expendable, that paved the way for the Horse to get A-Rod. Rodriguez is batting .179 with 1 home run through 12 games this season. Last season, he batted
.284 with 15 home runs and 92 RBI. He'll be immediately plugged into the Iron Horse's potent lineup.
Smith is currently batting .349 for the Iron Horse. Johnson is 2-1 with a 3.16 ERA.
"I'm excited to join the Iron Horse," said Rodriguez. "I was under extreme pressure last season,
and the way I stunk in the post-season, I'm ready for a fresh start, and I think the fans in Chicago
will see the way I can play."
The Wizard will be teamed up with Eddie Stanky up the middle, making a formidable double play
tandem. "Eddie Stanky is a perennial All-Star and a stand-up guy, and I look forward to making a
lot of plays with him. I'm hoping that Walter and I can make this team better than it already is."
Johnson could not be reached for comment.
